Chips – Poker chips are the currency at any poker table. Different coloured chips represent different amounts of money. The amount of chips you win can be swapped directly for cash value depending on the rules of the platform.

Betting Limits – As the name suggests, betting limits set the bar of all bets being played on the table. It provides structure to the game and makes tables organized with financial equality. For example, 4/8 limits Omaha Hi-Lo game will allow a maximum raise of 4 on pre-flop and flop rounds with a maximum raise of 8 on turn and river.

Pot Limit – Pot limit games dictate that the maximum bet placed in a game will be equal to the size of the pot. PLO or Pot-Limit Omaha is a very popular game which also employs this betting structure.

No Limit – These games have no structure associated with bets being played and they allow their players to use any amount of chips to be played at any instance in the game.

Table Stakes – There are two notable terms to note in table stakes, a big blind and a small blind. Table stakes are the amount of big blind in any given poker game. For example, a 1/2 Texas Hold’em Poker game will use 1 as small blind and 2 as a big blind.

Forced Bets - Blinds and Antes

The first player to act (to the left of the dealer) must place a small blind, and the next player must place a big blind, after which the other players at the table may choose to call, raise, or fold. The purpose of these blinds is to bring out some chips onto the table for everyone to start playing for. The players who are in those positions must pay them.

Assuming we are playing 1-2 No-Limit Hold'em, the player to the dealer's left will place the small blind, which is 1, and the player to their left will place the big blind, which is 2. According to poker card rules, these blind bets must be placed.

There are specific positions and fixed actions related to those positions in every poker game. Antes are only used to increase the pot size prior to the flop. Players are more motivated to compete for the middle dead money because of them.

Please be aware that traditional antes are being replaced by either button or big blind antes, which are taken from one player and are larger in size. This format is used specifically in tournaments to quicken the pace of play. All players will be subject to ante as the blinds rotate at the conclusion of each hand.

How does a dealer work in poker?

A dealer’s job is very straight forward in any poker game. The dealer will deal you your hand, the flop cards, turn card and river card, hence the name dealer because they deal all the cards. Another main work done by the dealer is to identify the winning hand and declare it the winner then send the accumulated chips to the winner of each round.

The dealer will initially hand over 2-4 cards to you, depending on the format. Then they reveal a total of 5 cards on the table in sets of three, one and one, these are called the community cards. The first set of three cards is known as the flop, the following one is called turn and the last card  is called river.

Among your cards and the community cards, the goal is to find the strongest combination and the dealer declares the player with the best combination is called out to be the winner. The strength is determined only on the basis of the best 5 cards out of the 7 or 9 taken into consideration for each particular player.
