Omaha Poker is the second most popular free online poker game after Texas Hold’em. We suggest you learn the rules of Texas Hold’em online first before trying Omaha poker once you master these. There are only a couple of differences between these free online poker games.
The main difference between the two is that in Omaha players receive 4 hole poker cards and need to use exactly 2 of these to make the best hand in poker. The other rules, including order cards, are dealt with, betting rounds, blinds, and showdown are all the same.
It is important to understand that exactly 2 hole cards need to be used as many players get confused by this rule. For example, if there are 2 clubs on the community cards and you have 3 clubs in your hole cards, you will not have a flush as you can only use 2 of the 3 clubs in your hand.
Another difference is often the betting type as Texas Hold’em is normally played No Limit meaning players can bet as many of the chips they have in front of them as they want whereas Omaha poker is often Pot-Limit which means the total bet cannot exceed the previous value of the total pot. While playing an online poker game, this is done automatically to ensure players remain within the limits.
In Omaha Poker online game, betting occurs in a clockwise direction, starting with the player sitting to the left of the big blind. Also, it allows you to play free online poker with friends.
If a player does not make a bet during a betting round, they are said to have checked. They will not add more chips to the pot but will need to do so if anyone later in the round bets. You can only check if no one else has placed a bet before you act.
If no one has placed a bet before a player acts, they can make a bet themselves. This means all other players still in the hand will need to either call that bet, fold or raise.
If you don’t want to put more money into the pot but someone in a betting round has bet, then you can fold and leave the hand for someone else to win.
If a poker player has previously made a bet or raise, to remain in the hand and have a chance of winning the pot, you will need to and match the previous highest bet from that betting round.
Should you have a good hand you can raise it when it is your turn to act in a betting round which means you will increase the largest bet and force all remaining players to either fold or call your bet.
If all of your chips are in the pot then you are known as all-in. This results in you paying for the part of the pot you have bet into or losing your entire bankroll depending on whether you win or lose the best hand in poker.
Omaha poker is played using blinds which ensure every hand has money for the winner. Every new hand has 1 player who is known as the small blind and 1 who is known as the big blind who make a forced bet depending on the stakes for that game. The players who place these bet changes each hand to ensure fairness.
In Omaha poker, each player is dealt 4 hole cards face down. They can use only 2 of these to make up a hand at showdown but don’t need to decide which 2 to use until this time. Once all players have received their hole cards, the first betting round takes place.
As in Hold'em Texas poker, the first 3 community cards or flop are dealt with once the first betting round has ended. These are cards that all players can use and are therefore dealt face up in the middle of the table. A new betting round then takes place.
After the second betting round has been completed, one more community card – known as the turn - is dealt. Poker players will have received nearly all the cards by this point and should have a good idea of how good their hand is. Another betting round now takes place.
The final card dealt is known as the river and completes the cards available to each player. A final betting round follows for all remaining players.
After the final betting round has been completed, it is showdown time. The first player to act chooses their best 2 hole cards – while playing free online poker game, this is done automatically - and the next player then either shows their best 2 hole cards if their hand is of a higher value than the previous best hand in poker or muck their hand if they cannot beat it. Players with a losing hand do have the option to show what they had if they prefer not to muck. The best 5 card hand wins the pot. Should one or more players have the same 5 card hand, the pot is split evenly between those players?
