The rummy game starts with each player dealing with 13 cards from the deck. The dealer deals the card to every player on the table. Once the players receive the 13 cards, they can start sorting them into valid sequences and sets.

Players can draw cards and discard unwanted cards from their hands. Each player draws a card from the draw or discard pile. The player discards one card at a time and places it face-up in the discard pile.

The combinations made by a player are checked and validated after they declare the game. A player must make at least two sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence, according to the rummy rules. The remaining cards can be combined to form sets or impure sequences.

When you declare your cards without fulfilling any of the three requirements of a valid declaration your declaration becomes invalid.

For a valid declaration, you need to:

  • At least one pure sequence must be created. Three or more subsequent cards of the same suit make a pure sequence.

  • The remaining cards that aren't in one of the two sequences should be placed in sequences or sets. It is not necessary to form a set, but all of the cards must be part of a valid declaration.

If you make an invalid declaration, you will immediately lose the game and your opponent will be considered the winner if the table has two players. A group of 3-4 cards of the same suit arranged sequentially is a sequence.

In order to have a valid hand or declaration, at least two sequences must be formed. You can make these valid declarations:

  • Two sets and two sequences;
  • One set and three sequences;
  • Each card is set in a certain order.

A pure sequence must also be present in one of the two sequences. The penalty points are determined by adding the points from all of your cards; you will only lose if you declare with a pure sequence.

The game of rummy involves a lot of skills and strategy, as players need to constantly analyze their hands and decide which cards to keep and which ones to discard. It is a popular game among players of all ages and skill levels.

How to Form Sequences?

Now that you have learned how to play rummy game, what is rummy game and what the objective of rummy game is, let's learn how to form sequences to make a valid declaration and win the rummy game.

A group of 3-4 cards of the same suit arranged sequentially is a sequence.

Types of sequences:

Pure Sequence:

Pure Sequence also known as “pure run” is a type of sequence with 3 or more cards of the same suit.

Example 1:

5♦ - 6♦ - 7♦

(It is a pure sequence that includes three consecutive playing cards of diamonds. Throughout the sequence, no card has been swapped in exchange for a joker.)

A♣ - 3♣ - 4♣ - 5♣

(It is a pure sequence that includes four consecutive cards of clubs. Throughout the sequence, no card has been swapped in exchange for a joker.)

4♥ - 5♥ - 6♥ - 7♥ - 8♥

This pure sequence includes five consecutive cards from the heart suit. Throughout the sequence, no card has been swapped in exchange for a joker.

In a pure sequence, a wild joker can also be used in its original value, but only as a card from the same suit and never to replace any other card.

Example 2:

Let us consider the following example: 8♥ - 9♥ - 10♥ (WJ).

The sequence is still pure since 10♥ has not been used as a joker to replace any other card in the sequence: it is been applied in its real value (10) and as a card of its real suit (♥).

This method is frequently effective when you have a large number of wild jokers.

When you only have a few wild jokers, use them to make impure sequences and sets.

Impure sequence:

Impure Sequence also known as “impure run” is a type of sequence with 3 or more cards of the same suit with printed Joker or wild Joker.

For Example

10♥ - J♥ - PJ - K♥

This is an impure sequence, where Q♥ is replaced by a printed joker.

2♠ - 3♠ - 7♦ (WJ)

7♦ is a wild joker in this impure sequence which is replaced by 5♠

The above examples show how to form the sequences to make valid declarations in the rummy game.
